How To Safe iOS 8.2 Battery Life on iPhone and iPad

Many users have been complaining of battery life issues after upgrading to iOS 8.2

WhatsApp's CEO Threw Shade at Apple For iOS 8's New Texting Features

WhatsApp's CEO Jan Koum, the newly minted billionaire, is a little annoyed at Apple's recently announced updates to iOS 8.

Yesterday, Apple pulled the covers off of iOS 8, and showcased new texting features that let users send brief audio and video messages to each other that auto-delete, much like WhatsApp (and Snapchat) before it. Like so:

The similarities are obvious, but shouldn't be entirely surprising. But Koum took to Twitter - and not Facebook - to send a slight jab over to Apple:

He shouldn't be mad, though - it's not like almost EVERY texting app today hasn't borrowed something from BlackBerry's BBM.

First-Person GoPro Footage of What's It's Like to Be Robbed at Gunpoint on a Bike

While riding around South Africa, this man was robbed of his mountain bike, phone and other items, and it was all caught on footage thanks to his GoPro camera strapped to his helmet (which the robbers failed to notice.) Becareful what you leave home with, you never know if you'll be coming back with it or not.

Two People Are Dead After Trying to Get a Cellphone Out of a Giant Toilet

A woman in China's Henan Province dropped her $300 cellphone into a pit toilet (think: outhouse), and her husband was nice enough to crawl into the pool of fecal matter to retrieve her device. But, once he was in there, he was overwhelmed by the fumes coming from excrement, and fainted.

Then, his mother climbed into the pit to save him, but she, too, succumbed to the stench, and lost consciousness shortly after. Then the man's wife, the one who dropped the phone, climbed into the pit and fainted as well. In the commotion, the woman's father-in-law and two of their neighbors became trapped in the pit trying to rescue them.

While they were able to get everyone out in a matter of minutes, they had to wait over an hour for an ambulance to arrive, and the husband and his mother died.

(Note: with the amount of fecal matter in a large pit, methane gas can build up without proper ventilation, and can suffocate someone, as it did here.)

Apple iWatch is Coming in October

Even though Apple dropped a few big bombs on us at WWDC, which included Max OS X Yosemite and iOS 8, there was one hole left in the event: any mention of the iWatch.

Now, according to a new report from the Japanese newspaper the Nikkei, which has a good record for reporting release dates, the iWatch will be released in October. It will come with a curved OLED screen and will run iOS 8, which will complement health features that will run with Apple's new HealthKit app.

Furthermore, Nikkei also says that Apple is developing a partnership with Nike for the iWatch, which makes sense following the massive layoffs of the FuelBand department a few months ago.

Is there too much hype around this thing, or are you willing to buy?

Everything You Should Know About Google's Android Wear Smartwatches

The hot buzz word right now on the consumer front is wearables. Every major tech company from Samsung to Sony has already jumped on the trend, releasing their own line of smartwatches in an attempt to bank on a vastly growing market forecasted to ship nearly 37 million units by next year. And with talks of Apple working on its long-rumored computerized wristwatch, the war for smartwatch supremacy is just heating up. But while all the major players seem focused on the hardware end, Google has been busy designing a wearable version of its Android operating system dubbed Android Wear.

Courting LG and Motorola to help launch its highly anticipated platform, Google is set to bring forth the most advanced and purest Android experience onto its wrist-worn devices, which it hopes to accomplish through a series of innovative features, striking designs, and multi-platform support. Judging from what's been shared, we could be looking at elite front-runner for hi-tech timepieces. Take a look at Everything You Should Know About Google’s Android Wear Smartwatches.

Google Employees Get the Best Salaries and Benefits in the Country

Results of a new survey have confirmed what we've pretty much known all along: Google employees get the best salaries and the most appealing perks in the US. Other Silicon Valley firms aren't too far behind, with 12 of them having been ranked in the top 25.

The survey, conducted by Glassdoor, puts Google ahead of other tech giants like Facebook, Microsoft, and Adobe. While Google engineers earn an average base salary of $128,000, Facebook engineers bring in just under $120,000. The plebs at Microsoft and Adobe, meanwhile, can expect to rake in $111,000 and $93,000.

Amazon and Apple both pay their engineers handsomely, but their massive infrastructures - including, respectively, warehouse and retail employees who don't get the same cushy benefits as headquarter employees - mean they aren't in the top 25. Still, it looks like Silicon Valley rewards its workers pretty well overall.

Dubai Has The World's Fastest Police Car

When you’re patrolling around the streets of Dubai, you need a car that stands out amongst Ferraris and Lamborghinis and Rolls Royces. Even though it’s a few years old now, the Dubai police’s new Bugatti Veyron can still lay claim to the title of world’s fastest police car.

The police of Dubai actually have access to a huge range of luxury supercars, like a 700hp tuned Mercedes G-Wagen, and a Ferrari FF and Lamborghini Aventador. I guess that’s what happens when you have billions of dollars of oil wealth to spend.

Vocativ‘s look at the Dubai police force’s collection of world-beating supercars, focusing on the new addition of the Bugatti Veyron, is a great way to spend five minutes of your day. There’s one small problem - the new Veyron actually isn’t the 267mph-capable Super Sport, but only the 253mph-rated regular car. Still pretty quick.

Asus shows off 14-inch touchscreen USB monitor

Yeah, yeah. We know. USB monitors are pretty much useless for anything involving moving images, but Asus’ latest version comes with a touchscreen – and that’s a big deal.

Why? Well, because the addition of touchscreen means that these monitors can now be hooked up to tablets. The touchscreen can connect to any device that has a USB 3.0 port and has support for up to ten fingers.

While it’s not going to blow your Galaxy Tab Pro out of the water, it does mean that buying a smaller tablet doesn’t mean being locked into a tiny screen.

The resolution isn’t great though. The version Asus has on display at Computex only has a resolution of 1,366 x 768, but that should be enough to give those wanting a bigger screen for short periods of time other options than replacing their tablet.

It’s currently only a prototype, so there’s no price or launch date but we'll, ahem, monitor the situation. ASUS Transformer Book T100TA-C1-GR 10.1" Detachable 2-in-1 Touchscreen Laptop, 64GB

The official Lego range is available in stores now. Guardians of the Galaxy arrives in cinemas in the UK on July 31st.

LaCie's New Rugged Thunderbolt Drive Has An Integrated Cord

If you were a filmmaker who spent a lot of time on the road, LaCie’s new rugged Thunderbolt drive would be on your wishlist. It’s wrapped up in a neat little IP-54-rated water-resistant and drop-resistant package, with the cord already attached. And it’s about as fast as they come.

LaCie claims the USB 3.0 drive will give you transfer speeds of up to 387MB a second.

At that rate, you should be able to move 100GB of video and photo content over in less than five minutes. You can also drop it from a mountain, given that mountain is only two meters tall and be sure your stuff will still be safe.

Plastic Logic flexible AMOLED near-invincible screens

Plastic Logic has demoed its flexible AMOLED screen that could beat all others to smartphones and wearables soon.

The screens are still in the early stages of development but are already capable of 30 frames per second refresh rates, 256 levels of grey and improved brightness. E Ink should be worried. And if Plastic Logic cracks colour, as it claims it's close to doing, all other screens are in danger too.

The screen represents a new future for mobiles and wearables as it's made of plastic alone. There's no need for glass. That means it can be thinner, lighter and is obviously shatterproof. It's pretty much indestructible and can be bended to fit whatever it sits into - this also means a simpler and cheaper manufacturing process.
While this type of screen is impressive it could be a while before we see it in colour, especially at a level comparable to current AMOLED screens. With the rumoured iWatch on its way from Apple and competition hotting up in the smartwatch market this could be a huge factor in the market's future. Watch this wrist space.

Alton Brown gives you another foolproof recipe to make something perfect and delicious: grilled steak over coals. There’s no way you can fail using his method.

Alton uses a skirt steak for this method. His best trick in the video is to let the meat to get to room temperature - something that always has to be done when cooking meat on a grill or a pan. This is crucial for the final result to be perfect.

If you cook meat out of the fridge, it will always end like shit. If you don’t have a grill and want to have awesome meat, Don’t worry, three-Michelin-star chef Martin Berasategui - one of the world’s best - and David de Jorge - a culinary titan on his own right - got you covered.

Geek Out This Is The Most Amazing Infinity Pool I've Ever Seen

This incredible infinity pool belongs to the Mirage house, which will be built on the Greek island of Tinos, exactly the place I want to be right now. The pool and the house and the place and the entire concept are really amazing.

This 198sqm cavernous house designed by Kois Associated Architects is conceived as an invisible oasis, most of the building is buried in the landscape, so the residents can enjoy panoramic views over the Aegean Sea without giving up their privacy.

World’s tallest Lego tower built with nearly half a million bricks

A Lego tower has been built in Budapest that has broken the Guinness World Record for The Tallest Structure Built with Interlocking Plastic Bricks.

The tower stands with bricks alone and no form of external support. The Official Lego Builders team managed, with the help of some local children, built a 114-foot tower. On top sat an oversized representation of a Rubik's Cube to honour the toy's inventor.

The tower was built using around 450,000 bricks. The previous record holder used 500,000 bricks to build a 112-foot and 11-inch tower in Delaware last August.

The record for the tallest Lego tower was broken an impressive three times last year. So we don't expect to see this record stand for much longer.

What's new in the Android 4.4.3 KitKat update?

Google has started to push an over the air update to Android that is a minor patch but offers a couple of user interface tweaks.

It has reportedly started to hit Google Nexus 5 devices, as well as phones that feature a raw Android 4.4 experience, including the Moto E, Moto G, Moto X and the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition.

The Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablets will get it too. So, if you have any of the related handsets, what can you expect to find once the update has installed?

Bug fixes

Android 4.4.3 KitKat is mainly an update to ensure that the phones or tablets run smoothly and several bug fixes have been pushed to ensure that is the case.

Excessive battery drain issue

One of them is a fix to the battery drain issues that could occur when an app uses a device's camera. This tended to only occur on devices sporting a Qualcomm processor, but to be honest that covers a vast number of handsets and tablets out there.

Dialer application

A new dialer application has been introduced with Android 4.4.3. It's effectively a Google design tweak, with a new colour scheme and the white background and blue numbers suit the style of KitKat far more.

People application

The people app offers the exact same functionality, but gone are the grey photo icons for contacts without photos to more colourful alternatives. It makes that segment more fun-looking.

Others

A full change list detailing the numerous other fixes is yet to be revealed by Google. The ones listed above are the main ones though, so you can see that this isn't exactly the biggest Android update we've had in recent times.
As they are mainly applicable to devices that are unskinned by manufacturers, it is unlikely to roll out in the same form for those devices. Some of the bug fixes might be pushed in time.

Computer trickery makes these shadows dance

You know how to turn crooked vases into an interesting art installation that remind us of Beauty and the Beast's singing pots and candlesticks?

We'd like to say magic, but since we don't live in a Disney movie, the right answer is motion tracking and real-time 3D rendering. The installation's creators, artist Laurent Craste and digital agency Dpt., used a hidden projector to make the vases' shadows dance whenever a viewer swings the lamp above them.

Their movements even depend on the lamp's swing, so side-to-side swinging triggers the same animation, while a more circular one also shows the lamp's shadows going in circles. Sadly, you can't see this in person anymore (it was displayed at a festival in Montreal in May), but you can watch the video after the break.

Police Make Arrest In Fatal Brooklyn Elevator Stabbing

NEW YORK - A man believed to have stabbed a 6-year-old boy to death and critically injured a 7-year-old girl in a knife attack in a public housing building elevator that didn't have security cameras was arrested Wednesday just minutes after the mayor and the police commissioner publicly identified him and appealed for help catching him, police said.

Daniel St. Hubert was picked up just after 8 p.m. in a residential neighborhood in Queens in connection with the death of Prince Joshua Avitto and the injuring of Mikayla Capers days earlier in Brooklyn, authorities said. No details were provided on how St. Hubert, 27, was captured.

Mississippi Restaurant Patrons React To Gay Couple's Kiss, Other PDA On 'What Would You Do'

ABC's hidden camera show "What Would You Do?" took a look at how Mississippi locals would react to an act of blatant anti-gay discrimination at a restaurant in a recent installment.

Two actors portraying a gay couple visited a Mexican eatery, while third played a customer angered by the pair's public displays of affection. The reaction from the legitimate customers in the restaurant is both eye-opening and (at times) inspiring.

Over the past seven years, the ABC series has tackled other LGBT issues and scenarios. In a 2012 segment, "RuPaul's Drag Race" alum Carmen Carrera was cast in the role of a New Jersey diner waitress, while an actor portraying a longtime customer openly berated the employee he once knew and liked as "Christopher" after realizing she identified as transgender.

Another scenario, featured that same year, featured a young boy who tossed aside Hulk and Spiderman costumes in favor of Belle's dress from Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" while shopping with his mother before Halloween.

Chrissy Teigen Wears Underwear On The Red Carpet And It Works, Obviously

Move over Rihanna, there's another sheer gown in town. OK, maybe Chrissy Teigen's gown at The Gordon Parks Foundation benefit Tuesday night wasn't quite as sheer as Riri's CFDAs number, but if our vision is clear, that looks a LOT like high-waisted underwear under her dress. And we're not even mad about it.

This outfit choice isn't too shocking. After all, whether it's for a photo shoot with Cosmopolitan or to get a rise out of her Instagram followers, the supermodel is anything but shy when it comes to stripping down. And somehow, with her glowing makeup, tousled updo and sparkly accessories, this revealing look is actually pretty classy. We guess this disproves the whole "never wearing underwear" thing, though.

What do you think of Chrissy's bold move? Sound off below!

05-06-2014 - Italy 1-1 Luxembourg (Friendly)

Claudio Marchisio headed in Mario Balotelli's cross to put Italy ahead. They looked set for victory until the 85th minute when ex-Sheffield United defender Maxime Chanot nodded in.

The Azzurri, who open their Group D campaign against England on 14 June, leave for Brazil on the back of two poor displays, having drawn 0-0 against the Republic of Ireland on Saturday.

Coach Cesare Prandelli, hit by the recent loss of key midfielder Riccardo Montolivo with a broken leg, experimented with a new formation

05-06-2014 - Ecuador 2-2 England (Friendly)

England have drawn their penultimate World Cup warm-up game 2-2 against Ecuador. They fell behind inside eight minutes, but goals from Wayne Rooney and Rickie Lambert put Hodgson's side into the lead.

A stunning strike from Michael Arroyo levelled proceedings before Raheem Sterling and Antonio Valencia were both dismissed.

Hodgson will be keeping tabs on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere, who both hobbled off, but there were certainly positives to be taken from tonight.

05-06-2014 - Uruguay 2 - 0 Slovenia (Friendly)

With Luis Suarez still sidelined by a knee injury, it fell to Edinson Cavani and Christian Stuani to provide the goals at the Centenario stadium.

Cavani headed the first from 10 yards in the 37th minute when he powerfully met a floated cross from the left delivered by Diego Forlan.

Paris St Germain striker Cavani was involved in the second goal in the 76th minute,

when he took the ball away from Slovenia goalkeeper Samir Handanovic and handed Stuani an easy task of slotting in.

05-06-2014 - Netherlands 2-0 Wales (Friendly)

Robin van Persie sparked fresh concerns over his fitness after playing just 45 minutes of Holland's laboured 2-0 friendly win over stubborn Wales in Amsterdam.

05-06-2014 - Argentina 3-0 Trinidad/Tobago (Friendly)

Captain Lionel Messi missed several first-half chances before striker Rodrigo Palacio headed the home side ahead immediately before the break.

Messi, who has scored only once in two World Cup tournaments, then hit the post with a free-kick but Javier Mascherano tapped in the rebound and Maxi Rodriguez scored from a tight angle to complete the victory.

"We finished strongly, Trinidad and Tobago were opponents who closed up at the back like some teams in the group will do at the World Cup," said Messi, who opposition midfielder Ataullah Guerra bowed to before the match.

Argentina play a final warm-up match at home to Slovenia in La Plata on Saturday before opening their World Cup campaign against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Sunday, 15 June.

HTC unveils the One E8

The HTC One E8 is almost the same phone as the One M8, albeit with a polycarbonate casing and a dual-SIM option.

According to HTC, it will be arriving in “selected markets” in “early June”, unfortunately the company didn’t elaborate.

Like the M8, the E8 comes with a five-inch screen with a 1080p screen. In fact, the only real change other than the plastic back is that HTC has replaced the dual-sensor Ultrapixel with the same 13-megapixel sensor found in the recently announced HTC One Mini 2.

Looks wise, the E8 comes in a choice of colours, including red, blue, black and white. It’ll also be getting its own line of Dot View cases.

The dual-SIM version won’t be arriving everywhere though, HTC has confirmed. However, it hasn’t confirmed how much it will cost when it arrives – or if it will even arrive in the UK.

Sony bids farewell to the 10-year-old PSP handheld

Sony has announced the PSP will be discontinued in Japan later this month, following a 10 year spell on the shelves and more than a few hit games during that time.

The announcement came as Sony revealed two new Super Value Packs for the PS Vita and is, presumably, a way to push sales of the new system.

While Sony hasn't explicitly said what will happen to the PSP in other markets, a discontinuation on home turf is usually a pretty good indicator of the end of the line.

The handheld games device had a good run though. It launched back in 2004 and sold around 500,000 units in the first couple of days in Japan. It proceeded to break records in the UK and became a genuine alternative to Nintendo's handheld dominance.

Two refreshes along the way saw the console become thinner and lighter and transition more towards digital downloads than Sony's proprietary Universal Media Disc. There was even the download-only PSP Go in 2008 - which was met with mixed reviews.

Now the PSP is shuffling off to the big videogame store in the sky, Sony will be looking to the recently refreshed PS Vita to carry on its handheld
campaign.

Innovative Bradley watch lets you tell the time by touch

A new timepiece being sold by style site Dezeen lets blind users tell the time by touch alone.
The Bradley watch, created by US design company E-one, uses a magnet and two ball bearings that rotate around the watch face.

Constructed from titanium, the watch has no cover so the wearer can touch the raised hour markings as well as the ball bearings to determine the time.

"We never would have hit on this idea of using ball bearings to tell time if we hadn’t been solving the problem of designing a watch for the visually impaired," said lead designer at Eone David Zacher.
Originally the benefactor of a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, the Bradley has been nominated for a Design Museum Design of the Year award.

It's available to pre-order now from the Dezeen Watch Store for the reduced price of £135 until it goes on general sale on June 30. Shipping is expected to take place on July 14.

Mario Kart 8 has already sold 1.2 million copies

Mario Kart 8 was released for the Wii U on Friday and has become the fastest selling game on the console.

It’s also brought some good news to Nintendo’s door – it resulted in a 666 per cent increase in the number of Wii Us sold compared to last week.

However, it only made number two in the multi-platform charts. It was held off the top spot by Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs.

“Such positive early feedback for Mario Kart 8 reinforces the great gameplay experiences that Wii U currently offers,” said Nintendo of Europe president Satoru Shibata.

"With Nintendo set to showcase its future releases at E3 next week, this is a great milestone going into the summer season The milestone means that the Mario Kart series has sold more than 100 million copies to date.

Watch teenagers get hilariously confused about the internet in the 90s

"Kids these days", every person who ever grew up said about the people younger than them who hadn't grown up yet. Kids just don't know how we had it. They don't know what it's like. They don't know that the Internet was a confusing place that was mind numbingly slow and that it wasn't everywhere.

Seriously, teenagers today have no clue. TheFineBros had teenagers—these aren't babies! Watch a commercial about the Internet in the 1990s and their reactions are priceless.

You'll notice how stunned they are at the simple things like how big the computer was, laugh at how impatient they are at the video being too long and more. Kids these days, man.

Virgin Galactic space flights have been cleared for take off

The deal between Virgin Galactic and the US Federal Aviation Authority marks a major step for commercial space travel with flights set to go on sale by the end of 2014.

The agreement lays out rules how the space flights will be integrated into US air space making a safe flight zone for Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo.

The space flights will begin at the Spaceport America base in New Mexico and will be coordinated with the normal air traffic control system.

"Our team is working hard to begin routine and affordable space launches from Spaceport America and this agreement brings us another step closer to that goal," said Virgin Galactic CEO George Whitesides.

Virgin Galactic plans to start commercial flights by the end of 2014 with already more than 600 people having paid out $250,000 each for a seat on the first space flights.

Reckless Biker Escapes Death Five Times In Just A Few Seconds

Those Russian kids may be crazy but, if they fall from the top of those buildings and towers, it will be their problem. One day, they may make a mistake, fall, splat against the ground, and that would be it. This reckless biker, however, is playing with his life and the life of others, at least missing five collisions in this video.

The image stabilised GIF is faster than reality but, if you look at the entire video below, you will see that he has no respect for his own life and the life of anyone on that road. And of course, he records it all with a GoPro and uploads it to LiveLeak.

Air Horn LOUD

There are plenty of air horn apps around, but this is the loudest of the lot. It has three sounds too, for variety - one sounds like a vuvuzela (the horn which came to fame during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa), one a fog horn, and one like a trucker’s horn.

Tap the one you want, and shake your phone to make it louder. Errrrnnnhhhhhh!

Youngest Girl To Ever Climb Mount Everest Wants To Inspire Poor Kids To Follow Their Dreams

A poor 13-year-old girl from a tribal village in India became the youngest female to climb Mount Everest on Sunday. Malavath Poorna, a member of India's lowest Dalit caste, wanted to take on the challenge to bring recognition to her community and to encourage her peers to pursue their dreams, AFP reported.

The aim of my expedition was to inspire young people and students from my kind of background," she told the BBC. For a tribal [girl] like me, opportunities are very rare and I was looking for one opportunity where I could prove my caliber. The determined teen’s father earns just 35,000 rupees (roughly $600) per year, and the expedition was funded by a government-run social welfare organization, according to AFP.

Malavath made the climb along with her friend Anand Kumar -- a 16-year-old who also comes from an underserved family -- as well as an experienced mountaineer and a group of sherpas. They reached the peak at 6 a.m. on Sunday and promptly hoisted the Indian flag at the finish, according to the BBC.

Malavath’s accomplishment is even more remarkable considering that she reached the peak from the more difficult Tibetan side. Most people attempt the climb from the Nepalese side, but the country doesn’t allow climbers younger than 16 to scale the mountain, the BBC reported.

"We are happy that our girl has set the world record," Malayath’s parents told the Times of India. "We know she will go places. She is not only bright in academics, but also in adventure."

The Hidden Cash Millionaire Is Causing 'Pandemonium' In Los Angeles

The mysterious millionaire who hid cash in random places in San Francisco is now causing chaos at a Los Angeles area beach after surreptitiously "donating" his money there, too.

On Saturday, the purported middle-aged real-estate developer announced on his Twitter account, @HiddenCash, that he stashed 36 "Angry Bird" toys filled with cash around Hermosa Beach, Calif., an oceanfront city just south of Los Angele
s, for anyone to find.
The anonymous benefactor, who gained notoriety earlier this month after hiding money throughout the Bay Area, moved on to Burbank, Calif. on Friday and egged people on to go on a scavenger hunt for money there.

The frenzy continues into the weekend. This was the scene at Hermosa Beach a little over a half an hour after Saturday's clue was tweeted.

Some of the toy birds reportedly contained as much as $180. Apparently some guy who works at Tiki Mon bar found a bird with $180!

India: Teen sisters allegedly gang-raped, hanged to death in Uttar Pradesh; Cops suspected

Authorities in northern India said Thursday that they have arrested three men, including two police officers, suspected of gang-raping and killing two teenage sisters before hanging their bodies from a mango tree, sparking renewed public outrage over sexual violence in the country.

Villagers found the girls’ bodies hanging from the tree Wednesday morning, hours after they disappeared from fields near their home in Katra village in Uttar Pradesh state, police Superintendent Atul Saxena said. The girls, who were 14 and 15, had gone into the fields because there was no toilet in their home.

Hundreds of angry villagers spent the rest of Wednesday in silent prote
st over alleged police inaction in the case. Indian TV channels showed video of the villagers sitting under the girls’ bodies as they swung in the wind, preventing authorities from taking them down from the tree until the suspects were arrested.

Police arrested the three men later in the day and were searching for four more suspects.
Autopsies confirmed the girls had been gang-raped and strangled before being hung, Saxena said.
The villagers accused the chief of the local police station of ignoring a complaint by the girls’ father Tuesday night that the girls were missing. The station chief has since been suspended.
The family belongs to the Dalit community, also called “untouchables” and considered the lowest rung in India’s age-old caste system.

India tightened its anti-rape laws last year, making gang rape punishable by the death penalty. The new laws came after nationwide protests over the fatal gang rape of a 23-year-old woman on a moving bus in New Delhi that triggered nationwide protests.

Records show a rape is committed every 22 minutes in India, a nation of 1.2 billion people. Activists say that number is low because of an entrenched culture of tolerance for sexual violence, which leads many cases to go unreported. Women are often pressed by family or police to stay quiet about sexual assault, experts say, and those who do report cases are often subjected to public ridicule or social stigma. Last month, the head of Uttar Pradesh state’s governing party told an election rally that the party was opposed to the law calling for gang rapists to be executed.
