Jay Z Buys WiMP And Tidal Streaming Services

The deal is part of a bigger purchase of Swedish company Aspiro, which owns Tidal and another ad-free music streamer called WiMP. Project Panther Bidco Ltd., a firm controlled by Jay Z’s Shawn Carter LLC, is reportedly paying $56 million for the whole package. If it all goes through, the big money buy-out would see Jay Z have a major head start in the digital music market.

While Tidal and WiMP are anything but household names, they stand as a good platform for the rapper to build on. As of September last year, WiMP had 512,000 paying subscribers with 20,000 people signed up to Tidal. Aspiro’s board of directors have already looked at the bid and ‘unanimously recommended’ that all shareholders accept the offer. A statement from Aspiro welcomed Jay Z’s takeover:

"The Independent Bid Committee is of the opinion that Panther, indirectly owned by SCE and controlled by Shawn Carter, possesses the proprietary relationships, industry knowledge, as well as economic strength and the necessary commitment in order to realise Aspiro's strategic plan of expanding the Company's business and brand globally."

The purchase would see Jay Z take on rival streaming services Spotify and Beats. Dr. Dre made some serious money selling Beats to Apple last year, and it seems Jay Z wants to follow suit.
