The future of 3D is uncertain as its quickly come and gone through our local cinemas with no real lasting impact on audiences – a fad maybe? Well, not according to IMAX.
IMAX has come to the rescue with its new fully integrated dual 65mm 4K digital 3D camera, the first of its kind.
The hardware has actually been around for a while and has already been tried and tested by director Michael Bay for various sequences in his upcoming robot-smashing sequel, Transformers: Age of Extinction.
Michael Bay’s film will be the first to use the new technology, and its small, light, compact build means it can be taken basically anywhere with no practical limitations.
The camera is a true 4K stereo camera meaning that both the left eye and right eye images are captured at full 4K resolution.
The footage will also be presented in a 1.9:1 aspect ratio, offering moviegoers 26% more of the image than standard cinemas for a truly immersive 3D experience.
IMAX’s new tech can’t obviously make up for Michael Bay’s lacklustre scripts, although it’s an exciting prospect that could make 3D cool again.
