The German giant recently gave a virtual tour of its autonomous vehicle interiors, revealing that passengers and driver will be able to experience business class surroundings on their daily commute.
An upcoming concept, which is due to be fully revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas early next year, will play host to the space-age interior that allows all four occupants to face each other thanks to an innovative adjustable seating layout.
Passengers will also be able to interact with the vehicle via touchscreens and gesture control. The system automatically recognises the wishes of individual occupants for information or the selection of control functions by detecting eye, hand and finger movements. And judging by this picture, virtual reality is involved too. Hey, why not?
It also looks like windows might be a thing of the past too, with future Mercedes showing the outside world via cameras, on window-sized touchscreens inside the vehicle, giving occupants the opportunity to see info overlays and interact with their surroundings. Needless to say, details on this are a tad sketchy at present, but detailed information on landmarks, waypoints and routes can be called in thanks to the car's constantly connected status.
Should the driver want to actually take control of the car, like it's 1976 or something, they simply swivel around, and a retractable steering wheel pops into place. Mercedes is rapidly increasing its research into fully autonomous driving. Again, expect major advances set to be revealed at the 2015 CES show in January
