CyanogenMod 11 is now available for installation on Android One smartphones. CM is a hugely popular custom-built Android ROM that can replace the usual OS with a user-developed Android variant. Google announced its Android One scheme at its I/O conference earlier this year, touting the scheme as a smartphone roadmap to help bring budget handset tech to developing countries.
So far Android One has only been rolled out in India, with three firms - Spice, Karbonn, and Micromax - having released cheap-as-chips smartphones in the country. The most expensive of the handsets so far is Micromax's Canvas A1, which costs $106, or around £66.
Now any Android One device with an unlocked bootloader is good to install the popular CM ROM, giving users an alternative to the stock Android One skin. In other CM news, we recently heard that the Indian tech firm Micromax would be released phones ready-installed with CyanogenMod.
It's not yet been revealed what the price-point of these handsets will be, although it's an interesting move for a non-OEM ROM to be installed on a device.
It's not the first time CM has shipped as the stock system for a smartphone, with both Oppo and OnePlus offering smartphones with CM built-in out of the box.
