Amazon claims in a press release that its low prices and free two-day shipping over the festive period encouraged people to flock to its site to sign up for a free trial. The site also cites the surge in membership due to the 700,000 books, over one million songs and tens of thousands of TV shows and movies that Prime members have at their disposal.
Amazon even touts its one-hour delivery service, Amazon Now, as a reason for the big draw in customers. While the service only debuted last week in Manhattan, Amazon plans to expand its availability in 2015. "We are working hard to make Prime even better and expanding the recently launched Prime Now to additional cities in 2015," Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said in the press release, without mentioning specific cities.
