UK to host international Segway polo tournament

Teams from around the world will compete in the UK's first international Segway polo tournament. Sixteen teams are confirmed so far, with three from the UK and teams from Barbados, Germany, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the US also involved. The tournament is being organised by UK Segway Polo, an organisation started in 2014 by former polo player and coach Mark Weller in an attempt to encourage take-up of the fledgling sport in the UK.

The three British teams taking part are Team Cornwall, Team UK and Team GB, with experience levels in all 16 teams ranging from expert to near amatuer. Two British teams will also be taken to Germany to compete in July's Woz Challenge Cup, Segway polo's equivilant to a World Cup.

The rules of Segway polo have been adapted from bicycle and horse polo, with one obvious difference. Two teams of five Segway-riding players each hit a ball with mallets in an attempt to get the ball into the other team's goal. A standard match consists of four eight-minute periods.

The niche sport has been played internationally since 2006, when the first Woz Challenge Cup was held in Auckland, New Zealand.
