Given that Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial kickoff of the summer season, Disney wisely slated “Tomorrowland” for a big opening run. The Brad Bird family sci-fi flick starring George Clooney, Britt Robertson, Hugh Laurie and Raffey Cassidy nabbed $9.7 million on Friday and is expected to wind up with around $40.7 million by the close of business on Monday.
Coming in at #2 with $30.3 million is last week’s top film “Pitch Perfect 2,” while “Mad Max: Fury Road” took third place, “Poltergeist” came in fourth and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” rounded out the top five.
