Dog Found On Side Of Highway Gets A First Christmas With New Family

A beagle-basset-hound mix, was found on the side of a Louisiana highway, And it was a cold and dreary day suffering from broken bones and lung problems. Even in the face of parasites, fractures and pulmonary injury. It took months for the dog to gain enough weight to undergo surgery, but he toughed it out.

Ten months, several surgeries and thousands of dollars later, Escargot is a new dog. Source said the online dog rescue community, particularly the basset hound community, was instrumental in helping nurse the so-called "bagle" to health. With overwhelming support, she said, they "just went to town with donations and helping out.


Once Escargot had recovered — becoming something of a minor canine celebrity in the process — a flood of adoption requests poured in. "Lots of people wanted him," Torres said, some simply because "he was sort of a Facebook sensation." But there were plenty of good applications, too. Torres and her colleagues eventually settled on a family in Boston, Mass., who has a long history of caring for beagles and beagle mixes. 

Escargot arrived by car in Boston in late December, Torres said, and it's the first holiday he'll get to spend curled up by a Christmas tree. "He was the little dog that could, who fought so hard to stay alive," Torres said. "He fought so hard.
