Monster Machines: China's Building The World's Biggest Sea Plane

Just because the Spruce Goose never took off doesn’t mean that aquatic planes in general are wholly useless; these aquatic turbo-props are still used for a variety of humanitarian efforts throughout the world. Now, China has announced that it’s currently developing the world’s biggest functional sea plane. But will it ever get off the ground?

Built by China Aviation Industry General Aircraft (CAIGA), the TA “Dragon” 600 amphibious aircraft will boast an estimated 50-tonne maximum takeoff weight and upper operational range of 5000km, making the aircraft ideal for emergency operations — including firefighting and humanitarian relief efforts — where short takeoff and landing (STOL) capabilities are required. Plus, its seafaring abilities enable the plane to land in remote areas where lakes and other bodies of water are present but where landing strips or airfields may not be.

The plane is still under development, although CAIGA officials are confident that it will be ready for initial flight testing by the end of 2015. Should the Dragon 600 pass its tests, it should enter service shortly thereafter, dethroning Japan’s ShinMaywa US-2 (shown above) as the world’s largest operational amphibious aircraft

Geek Out Cocoa Farmers Trying Chocolate For The First Time Is A Must-Watch

You would think that chocolate is universal. Something that is everywhere, that everyone can enjoy. It’s not. There are people who have never tried it, even the farmers who break their backs to harvest cocoa beans for a few cents in the Ivory Coast. Watch their faces light up when they eat it for the first time.

Watching them marvel about this sweet food that comes from the beans they harvest is amazing to me. First, because it’s a joy to see their faces. Then, because it’s a stark reminder of how amazingly lucky we are.
For us westerners chocolate is just one more thing. It’s inconsequential. We like to eat it, sometimes we get delighted by it for a minute. But more often than not it’s just one more snack to stuff our fat faces with. We don’t think about it and the incredible effort and resources that are required to make it. We take it for granted along with the other billion foods and the other billion other technologies and privileges we didn’t fight for.

I’m not posting this to be preachy. This comes from a place of true wonder, to remind myself about my own comfortable numbness and the hundred things that I take for granted every day. One day something fatal will happen and then you will realise how much time you wasted whining about this or that rather than enjoying the infinite amount of awesome (yes, everything is awesome!) stuff that exists around you. I need some chocolate right now.  LOL

Watch Guys Do Push-Ups On The Surface Of The Water

We don’t run fast enough to walk on water, but aeroplanes and boats can whip us along at speeds so fast that we can ski barefoot and even do fun workout tricks like push ups without sinking.

Yeah. After seeing these guys do push ups on the surface of the water, walking on water is so passe.

Devin Super Tramp shows us how much fun you can have with just the water and your feet below:

Turn Your iPhone Charger Into a Portable Backup Battery

Even carrying your iPhone’s charger everywhere you go doesn’t guarantee you’ll be able to keep your phone running all day. Sometimes outlets can be hard to find, and for those times the NomadPlus is here to help — transforming your iPhone’s standard charger into a portable 1500mAh battery for back power on-the-go.

Shipping in late November for just $US39, the NomadPlus simply requires you to insert the compact AC adaptor that came with your recent-generation iPhone, immediately giving you a portable charging solution with enough power to bring a dead smartphone about 70 per cent of the way back to life.

When plugged into a wall it charges a connected device first, and then itself. So come morning your smartphone is ready to tackle the day, and then the evening on top of that, even if you can’t get access to an outlet.

Apple adds Fiat and Chrysler to CarPlay alliance

Both Fiat and Chrysler have announced that they will partner with Apple to integrate CarPlay into their forthcoming vehicles. The deal is significant because among the brands owned by the two companies are Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, and Ram.

Mazda is also joining the car makers siding with Apple in the car-entertainment platform battle.
They join existing CarPlay partners including Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, BMW, Ford, Hyundai, GM, and Honda. All are introducing CarPlay compatible cars before the end of the year. Other brands are planning on adding support before the end of 2015.

Earlier this year, aftermarket companies Alpine and Pioneer announced that they will be launching CarPlay products later this year for older cars.

Specialized McClaren S-Works Tarmac is a £16,000 super-bicycle

US bike firm Specialized has unveiled its McLaren S-Works Tarmac bicycle, the fruits of a joint labour effort with McLaren Automotive - and it costs a staggering £16,000. The carbon-fibre two-wheeler was created by McLaren using high-tech data simulations that tested the limits of the bike before it even went into production.

McLaren used the aforementioned software to help develop its F1, Super, and Hypercar designs, meaning this bicycle has some serious engineering oomph at its core. The bike was based on the latest version of the S-Works Tarmac bicycle, and sports some unique features compared to its forebear.

"Our design benchmark, the new S-Works Tarmac, was already a very, very efficient structure to start with," says Joe Marsh, composite design engineer at McLaren. "The McLaren uses 300 percent more high-modulus fibres in its construction, reducing material and therefore weight. We've also used more than 500 unique carbon-fibre ply shapes in the construction - that's 300 more than the standard S-Works."

The result is an super-strong bike frame that weighs in at under 6kg, plenty light to drag about on the tubes. It's got a particularly extreme looking black-and-orange paintjob too, courtesy of McLaren's Woking-based paint-team, the same crew that sorted out the finishing coat on McLaren's six-figure P1 Hypercar.

'Okay, so I've sold my car and various other worldly belongings. How do I get one?' Right, well there's actually only 250 of these being made, which didn't sound too bad until Specialized announced just ten of the bikes will land in the UK. You can register to get one at Specialized's website, and if you luck out then they'll invite you to undergo a 'Body Geometry fit session' where the team will tailor the bike's shape and size to fit you perfectly.

Despite the Wii U (finally) selling like hotcakes, Nintendo is still losing money.

Nintendo revealed that during the first quarter of its financial year, both the Wii U and Mario Kart 8 flew off the shelves. However, that wasn’t enough to stop the Japanese console maker haemorrhaging money.

Between April and June, Nintendo managed to sell 510,000 Wii U consoles. That’s nearly double what it managed to sell during the period after Christmas. It also managed to sell a total of 2.82 million copies of Mario Kart 8 in a month. That’s impressive for any console, but even more so considering how much the Wii U has struggled since it launched.

The Nintendo 3DS is also on the up – selling 820,000 units compared to 590,000 at the beginning of the year. Despite that, Nintendo made a loss of 9.4 billion yen – roughly £52 million. According to the numbers people, that loss is largely down to Nintendo’s lack of hot selling titles (other than Mario Kart 8 obviously).

That might change in the future though – well, at least Nintendo hopes it will. It pointed to the third generation Pokemon remakes and new Smash Bros for the 3DS and Wii U as games that could turn those losses around soon.

Teen's Smartphone Catches Fire Under Pillow As She Sleeps

A 13-year-old Texas girl recently woke up to a nightmare. Her cell phone had ignited under her pillow, and the fire melted the handset and burned the pillow, bedsheet and mattress.

Ariel Tolfree told Fox 4 in Dallas-Forth Worth that her Samsung Galaxy S4 slipped under her pillow as she fell asleep, and she was roused by the smoldering smell. Her father, Thomas Tolfree, suspected the fire started with the battery. In its defense, Samsung told the station that the battery was a replacement and not a Samsung, and that the company's user guide warns consumers that if their units are covered by bedding or other material, choked-off airflow could cause a fire. The company has offered to pay for the bedding, mattress and a new cell phone.

In February an eighth-grader in Maine also learned the hard way that smartphones can be combustible -- and she was wide awake. A unit reportedly caught fire in her pocket during school, and she suffered "moderate burns."

You're Helping Mark Zuckerberg Become The World's Richest Person

Some day in the near future you will read these words, tucked between headlines about the iPhone 10 and President Donald Trump's first 100 days in office: Mark Zuckerberg Becomes World's Richest Man. And you will have only yourself to blame. The Facebook CEO's net worth jumped about $2 billion on Thursday morning alone, before he had even finished his eggs and bacon that he slaughtered himself. That's because Facebook's stock surged to $76 a share from $71, one day after the company announced it had made roughly one entire buttload of money in the previous three months.
facebook stock
Facebook had a very good week.
By the end of Thursday, Zuckerberg was richer than fellow computer nerds Larry Page and Sergey Brin, co-founders of Google. He was richer than Amazon CEO and Lex Luthor clone Jeff Bezos.
According to Bloomberg News, Zuckerberg is now the world's 16th-richest person. How close is he to being No. 1?
Probably not far off, if things keep going this well. Facebook's stock was trading at $34 this time last year. Today it sells for $75. Fortunately for Zuckerberg, he has managed to hold onto 22 percent of Facebook, again according to Bloomberg -- a larger stake than Page, Brin or Bezos have in their companies.

Facebook already has more stock-market value than Amazon, and some day the little social network could be worth as much or more than Google, which now has a market value of almost $400 billion. Zuckerberg's share of a Facebook worth $400 billion would be $88 billion -- or $3.3 billion more than the current net worth of world's richest man Bill Gates.

Basically, Facebook is making tons of money because you can't stop using it. The shift from people going online with their laptops to people going online with their phones was supposed to kill Facebook, but Zuckerberg focused Facebook's energy and attention on making an irresistible mobile app. As a result, most of the $2.7 billion Facebook made in ad revenues in its latest quarter came from ads on cell phones.

And Facebook is expanding in a Google-like way into potentially lucrative new businesses like messaging, drones and virtual reality. What is the only thing stopping Facebook -- which is based in a Wonderland called Silicon Valley, where money is meaningless -- from being worth $400 billion? You, and your decision to keep logging onto Facebook, is basically the only thing.

Malware Can Hide in the Most Obvious Places

You never know when malware will bite. Even browsing an online restaurant menu can download malicious code, put there by hackers.

Much has been said that Target’s hackers accessed the giant’s records via its heating and cooling system. They’ve even infiltrated thermostats and printers among the “Internet of Things”.
It doesn’t help that swarms of third parties are routinely given access to corporate systems. A company relies upon software to control all sorts of things like A/C, heating, billing, graphics, health insurance providers, to name a few.
If just one of these systems can be busted into, the hacker can crack ‘em all. The extent of these leaky third parties is difficult to pinpoint, namely because of the confidential nature of the breach resolution process.

A New York Times online report points out that one security expert says that third party leaks may account for 70 percent of data breaches, and from the least suspected vendors, at that.
When the corporation’s software remotely connects to all those other things like the A/C, vending machines, etc., this is practically an invitation to hackers. Hackers love this “watering hole” type crime , especially when corporations use older systems like Windows XP.
Plus, many of the additional technological systems (such as videoconference equipment) often come with switched-off security settings. Once a hacker gets in, they own the castle.
The New York Times online report adds that nobody thinks to look in these places. Who’d ever think a thermostat could be a portal to cyber crime?

Security researchers were even able to breach circuit breakers of the heating and cooling supplier for a sports arena—for the Sochi Olympics.
One way to strengthen security seems too simple: Keep the networks for vending machines, heating and cooling, printers, etc., separate from the networks leading to H.R. data, credit card information and other critical information. Access to sensitive data should require super strong passwords and be set up with a set of security protocols that can detect suspicious activity.

Has Google just bought game-streaming Twitch.tv for $1bn?

It looks like Google's dropped big cash - $1bn big to be precise - on Twitch, the incredibly popular game-streaming service, according to a report by VentureBeat. We heard rumours back in May that Google might be looking to snap up Twitch with big money, and it seems the big G has followed through on the chatter.

While VB says it's assured the deal has gone through, some key points still remain unclear.
"We don’t know everything about this deal, such as when it will be announced and the exact purchase price," reads the report. "We do know that Twitch investors who participated in past rounds are pleased that they will be getting significant returns that are multiple times the amount they originally invested."

Apparently both Google and Twitch declined to comment on the move, but it's said that Google's YouTube division headed up the acquisition. Twitch is the world's most popular game-streaming platform, pulling in upwards of 45-million visitors every single month.

The service lets gamers stream their own footage, with League of Legends, Dota 2, and Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft amongst the most viewed titles. Gameplay can be streamed on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and the site often hosts footage from big e-sports events like the League of Legends LCS.

London Underground will accept contactless payment from September

If you're used to travelling around the capital, you'll be well aware that you can currently use contactless NFC (near-field communication) bank cards on buses. Now Transport for London is bringing the feature to the Tube, which will accept contactless payment as of September 16. Pretty much making your Oyster card redundant if you have one.

Contactless payment will also be supported on the Overground and DLR lines and you'll be able to keep track of your payment history and travelling preferences online. Existing alongside the RFID-using Oyster cards, the new contactless payment system will allow you to add a weekly cap from Monday to Sunday. The system keeps track of your journeys and figures out the cheapest possible fare for your movements.

If you make multiple journeys in one week using the same contactless card, then your payments will be capped to at the price of an equivalent 7-day travelcard.

Nike's vending machine sells products for Fuelband points

Nike's set up a bunch of vending machines around NYC brimming with swoosh gear that only the most active New Yorkers can snag. Dubbed the 'Fuelbox', Nike's pop-up machines are stocked with Nike goods that can only be purchased using Fuelband points.

Each item costs somewhere in the region of 500-1000 Fuelband points, with shirts, socks, watches, and more up for grabs. The Fuelboxes are only staying up until their stock clears completely so would-be Fuel-traders better hurry.

Interestingly, the vending machines only accept Fuelpoints earned within the last 24-hours, meaning you can't just unload a backlogged surplus of points onto the Fuelbox in exchange for heaps of goddies. Rumours emerged back in April that Nike was ditching Fuelband altogether, so news of the NYC Fuelboxes seems an altogether odd move from the kicks-flogging company.

Japan has put "selfie stands" at popular destinations

The selfie has come out of nowhere like a narcassistic whirlwind and become one of the most popular things we can do with our smartphones. Don't believe us? Sony has gone so far as to release a handset dedicated to taking selfies.

And now, over in Japan there are even dedicated selfie stands at popular locations allowing you to snap yourself for social media bragging rights. The stands feature a special slot where you can keep your smartphone secured for the duration of the selfie and are expertly positioned to take in the majesty of the surrounding scenerey.

It's also an excellent hangout spot for snatch-and-run thieves, but that's probably just us being cynical. We've not heard any news regarding UK-specific selfie stands but who knows, this could be the future of holiday photography.

Pirate Bay unveils swashbuckling new mobile site

The Pirate Bay has launched a dedicated mobile site, meaning P2P-enthusiasts can get their torrent fix direct via their smartphones. The new site, themobilebay.org, offers a much more mobile-focused user experience, designed to work more effectively with touchscreen displays.

"Over the years the Pirate Bay site has undergone many changes to make it harder to shut down. The tracker was put into retirement, torrents were traded in for magnet links, and the site moved its servers to the cloud," reads the report by TorrentFreak.

"What remained the same, however, was the site’s general appearance and its lack of support for mobile devices. That changes today." Before the mobile bay, mobile users were forced to access the site on a clunky desktop-style designed long before the rise of smartphones.

“The normal version of the site renders like crap on mobile devices,” says the TPB team, speaking to TF. “We will add more features later on, such as personal RSS feeds so users can browse torrents at work or school, and start the downloads at home."

Many UK ISP's already block access to the main Pirate Bay website along with several 'site mirrors' - essentially carbon copies of the site hosted elsewhere to circumvent the bans. “We’re trying to separate the site into different domain names to make it more resilient. In the event one domain get taken down, there will be plenty others left."

While there's nothing illegal about peer-to-peer file sharing, the Pirate Bay has faced lengthy legal issues over the fact that much of its content breaches copyright law - the site's founders are currently imprisoned as a result.

Amazon is reportedly making a Square-like payment card reader

Amazon may revolve around online shopping, but it apparently has some interest in brick-and-mortar retail -- there are now hints that it's launching a Square-style payment card reader. The crew at 9to5Mac has obtained Staples documents showing that a $10 "Amazon Card Reader" is launching sometime in the near future. While there's no exact release date on hand, the supply store is expected to start advertising Amazon's gadget on August 12th; logic suggests the peripheral would go on sale around then.

The company hasn't confirmed any plans, so take the apparent leak with a few grains of salt. We've reached out to Amazon to see if it can shed more light on the subject. Such a move would make sense for the e-commerce giant, though. It launched a wallet app mere days ago, so it clearly has an existing interest in the mobile payment sphere. Provided the leak is accurate, the real question is whether or not Jeff Bezos and company can lure stores away from the likes of Square or PayPal. This is already a fiercely competitive space, and many retailers are already wary of Amazon given that it thrives on luring customers away from conventional shops.

Russia's new tram is a Batmobile on the outside, tech hub on the inside

Many trams are memorable, but they tend to evoke nostalgia rather than embrace the future. You can't accuse UralVagonZavod (UVZ) of being behind the times with its new Russia One, though. To begin with, it looks like the Batmobile on a closed track -- and for good reason. The forward-tilted windshield helps the conductor spot pedestrians, while the glass composite panels are easy to replace.

The tram is cutting-edge on the inside, too. Dynamic LED lighting and music change the cabin mood to suit the time of day. You'll also find positioning (GPS and GLONASS), air conditioning, anti-bacterial hand rails and WiFi. The driver even gets a USB 3.0 port that can keep a phone powered up.

Don't count on hopping aboard one of these mass transit marvels when they go into production, which should be sometime in 2015. As the Russia One name implies, this machine is partly about national pride; UVZ believes the vehicle will primarily be used in major Russian cities.

Exports to Eastern Europe and South America aren't more than possibilities at this stage. Nonetheless, it's a big step forward for a form of public transportation that doesn't get a lot of love -- and it's probably the first tram that would make Bruce Wayne proud.

You can now unlock your Motorola phone with a 'digital tattoo'

Hate unlocking your Android smartphone so much that even Face Unlock or Skip feels like too much of a hassle? Motorola just came to your rescue. The company has partnered with VivaLnk to launch the previously teased Digital Tattoo, an NFC-based skin tag that unlocks your phone (currently limited to the Moto X) with a quick tap.

The tattoo can stay on your body for up to five days, and it should survive abuses like showers and sweat-laden runs. It's a clever approach that might be appealing if you're fed up with PIN codes and patterns, although the back-of-a-napkin math suggests that you're paying a lot just to save a couple of seconds when checking your email.

VivaLnk is asking $10 for packs of 10 tattoos, or enough to last 50 days -- you'll have to spend $80 to get through a whole year. It could be useful for those busy days when you're constantly waking up your handset, but you might be better off rolling that money into a Moto 360 or your next big phone upgrade.

Korean baseball team recruits robots as stand-ins for fans

In South Korea, the Hanwha Eagles baseball team has gained a bunch of new fans that'll never abandon them even if they lose every game they play. After all, these new die-hard supporters are robots -- stomping, chanting, Mexican waving faceless robots designed to encourage human followers to cheer the Eagles on.

They're officially called "fanbots," and they'll occupy three rows in the bleachers during a game, toting LED placards that display fans' (the flesh-and-blood ones) text messages for the team. Those screens that take the place of their faces?

They also have a purpose: to display fans' faces as they watch the game remotely. It's definitely unusual, but the Eagles can use all the support they can get as they don't exactly have a good record. And who knows -- these fanbots could end up converting non-believers and getting more actual human supporters to show up at their games.

Tesla confirms the Model 3

Dubbed the Model 3, Tesla’s latest model is reportedly aimed at people thinking about buying a BMW 3 series.

According to Tesla, the car will be around 20 per cent smaller than the Model S (pictured). It will also be able to go around 200 miles on a single charge. According to Auto Express, Tesla is expect to officially unveil the car in 2016.

The Model 3 will be Tesla’s fourth car. The company is currently preparing to deliver the first of its Model X crossovers later this year. Speaking to Auto Express, Tesla founder Elon Musk revealed that the company originally planned to call it the Model E.

However, a legal threat from Ford put paid to that. “We were going to call it model E for a while and then Ford sued us saying it wanted to use the Model E — I thought this is crazy, Ford’s trying to kill sex! So we’ll have to think of another name,” Musk joked. “The new model is going to be called Model III, we’ll have three bars to represent it and it’ll be S III X!”.

According to Tesla, the Model 3’s range will be just over 50 per cent lower than the model S. It will also lack the aluminium platform the Model S is built upon and use more cost-effective batteries to drive the price down. Leaked concept images suggest it will look like a shrunken down Model S.

Microsoft is going to sack 18,000 employees

Microsoft has revealed the extent of its planned job cuts, announcing that a staggering 18,000 positions at the firm will become redundant over the next year.

The consumer electronics company employs around 127,000 people worldwide, which means the approaching tidal wave of sackings will amount to just over 14% of Microsoft's entire workforce.
According to Microsoft, 12,500 of the jobs set to be booted will belong to Nokia staff. Microsoft bought the Finnish mobile manufacturer back in April, and says the job cuts are part of its strategy to absorb the company.

Most of the firings are going to take place before the new year, with any remaining job-holders marked for the sack assured to receive their goodbye waves by 30th June 2015 at the latest.
The announcement came via a press release sporting the most euphemistic headline we may have ever seen: '"Microsoft announces steps to simplify organisation and align devices strategy.' That's cold, man.

Microsoft's new CEO Satya Nadella wrote an open letter to all of his employees, outlining his thoughts on the move. "My promise to you is that we will go through this process in the most thoughtful and transparent way possible," says Nadella.

"We will offer severance to all employees impacted by these changes, as well as job transition help in many locations, and everyone can expect to be treated with the respect they deserve for their contributions to this company."

"Making these decisions to change are difficult, but necessary," says the Microsoft head, in his closing statement. According to the press release, the job cuts are expected to cost Microsoft somewhere in the region of $1.1-1.6 billion USD (£643-935 billion) over the next four quarters, most of which is severance pay.

Alibaba strikes deal to stream "Mad Men".

Alibaba has struck a deal with Lionsgate studio to stream popular U.S. movies and TV shows including "Twilight" and "Mad Men" in China. The subscription-based service will launch in August and be offered through Alibaba's Internet television set-top box.

Some Lionsgate (LGF) offerings are already available in China through other partnerships, but Alibaba's customers will have access to behind-the-scenes footage, said Jim Packer, the studio's president of worldwide television and digital distribution. "This is going to be more of a window into Hollywood and into how these movies get made and how these TV shows get made," he said.
Subscription fees have not yet been announced

Alibaba is preparing for a New York IPO that could be the largest in U.S. history.
Related: When will Alibaba go public? Ask a fortune teller The Hangzhou-based firm has been expanding its portfolio to boost its digital entertainment options, acquiring stakes in top Chinese streaming video and content companies.

Last month, the company even bought a local soccer club.Alibaba's strategy mirrors that of Amazon (AMZN, Tech30) -- another Internet retailer that has moved aggressively into steaming video, and even television production.

While still dwarfed by state broadcasters, streaming Web content is gaining popularity in China -- especially with younger audiences. U.S. shows including "The Walking Dead" and "House of Cards" are among the biggest hits, racking up tens of millions of views.

Online content is often racier or more controversial than shows broadcast on state-owned television channels such as CCTV. So far, the nascent Web streaming industry has largely managed to escape regulatory scrutiny.

IBM to start selling Apple iPhones and iPads

Get ready for iPhones and iPads preloaded with specialized business IBM software. Apple (AAPL, Tech30) and IBM (IBM, Tech30) on Tuesday announced a partnership to leverage each company's strengths. Starting this fall, Apple is delivering devices exclusively to IBM, which "Big Blue" will then prep with industry-specific apps for business customers. The idea is to provide specialized Apple devices to companies in banking, health care, insurance, retail, travel and transportation.

IBM said it will listen to the distinct needs of business clients, then craft software that addresses those issues. "For the first time ever we're putting IBM's renowned big data analytics at iOS users' fingertips, which opens up a large market opportunity for Apple," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement, calling the partnership "a radical step."

IBM CEO Ginni Rometty promised a "transformation to the way people work, industries operate and companies perform." Starting this fall, the devices will only be available through IBM representatives to their business clients.

They will include a private app catalog, data security services and more.
An IBM spokeswoman said it was too early to give examples of what kinds of apps would be available. The companies also said Apple devices would use IBM's vast and powerful cloud services -- which offer data storage and work-sharing capabilities.

Yahoo exec: Sex harassment accuser 'made the entire story up'

Calling the allegations "outrageously false," a Yahoo executive is countersuing a former employee who accused her of sexual harassment. "She made the entire story up in an attempt to save her job and avoid losing hundreds of thousands of dollars in unvested Yahoo stock," Yahoo senior director of engineering
Maria Zhang said in a defamation lawsuit filed Wednesday.

Zhang was referring to former software engineer Nan Shi, who filed a complaint against Zhang, accusing her of sexual harassment. Shi is also suing Yahoo (YHOO, Tech30) and Zhang for emotional distress and wrongful termination. Shi's complaint claims that Zhang "coerced" her to have "oral and digital sex" on multiple occasions. Shi said Zhang promised a "bright future" at the company in exchange for sexual favors. Shi said Zhang threatened to fire her if she refused

Related: Female Yahoo exec sued for sexual harassment Shi claims to have reported the harassment to Yahoo's human resources team, but said HR fired her after failing to perform a proper investigation. But Zhang says Shi fabricated the whole story. According to Zhang, Shi had been an underperformer and received negative performance evaluations from two other managers.

Zhang claims that Shi went to HR to complain about her and other managers when it became clear that Shi's job was in danger. But Zhang said that HR found Shi's claims to be unsubstantiated. Yahoo planned to fire Shi, Zhang claims. But as a last-ditch effort to save her job, Shi again went to HR, alleging Zhang forced her to have sex in return for favorable treatment. But Shi was "unable to provide a single piece of evidence" in support of her claim. Zhang says HR found that none of her correspondence with Shi indicated any sexual relationship.

Slow-Motion Video Reveals How Fish Actually Eat

Slow motion video reveals how fish actually eat

Dustpans Should Have Been Designed With Funnels From Day One

Dustpans Should Have Been Designed With Funnels From Day One
As handheld vacuums get better and better, there’s less need to keep a broom at the ready. That’s too bad, because this cleverly re-designed dustpan makes it easier to dump your sweepings into a garbage can, no matter how tiny it may be.

Gone are the days are emptying a dustpan into a garbage can that’s smaller than the width of the pan, resulting in dust and debris missing the receptacle. The handle on this dustpan from Menu has been turned into a funnel, making it easy to dump its contents with extreme precision.

Does that make it worth $US50? That’s a tough call, until the next time you have to re-sweep after emptying a dustpan, then you’ll be sold on its design.

This US Restaurant Might Have The Best Bread And Butter In The World

The bread and butter at US restaurant Razza Pizza Artiginale is made by James Beard Rising Star Chef semi-finalist Dan Richer. He’s the chef behind the restaurant, and might be more obsessed with bread and butter than any person on the planet. This video shows how he made his restaurant’s bread and butter the most delicious.

It’s just bread and butter, you say. Sure. But when you eat something so simple that’s so damn good, it can make you re-evaluate all your previous life decisions. That’s what this bread and butter does to people.

Richer’s enthusiasm for his bread and butter is infectious. He treats it like sushi chefs treat sushi. He says it’s the favourite thing he’s ever done. And the way he talks about cream, fermentation, and the pigmentation of the colour of the butter, I totally believe him. Razza Pizza Artiginale is in New Jersey. I want to go.

Bikers Attack Couple In Car, You Will NEVER Guess What Happens Next

Picture this: you're driving with your boyfriend or girlfriend when a gang of bikers surrounds you and forces your car to pull over. Your significant other steps out to reason with them, but is immediately shoved against the car's hood and surrounded!

Now, what do you imagine happens next? If you said SURPRISE WEDDING PROPOSAL, then you are... well, probably psychic, because that's exactly what occurs in this surreal video posted by androkols that allegedly took place in Russia.

The twist you would NEVER in your life see coming happens at about 1:42 into the clip. Because nothing says romantic more than fearing for your life, right?

The Largest Wave Ever Surfed On A Skimboard

Skimboarder Brad Domke headed to Puerto Escondido, Mexico, to encounter this insane-looking wave — the largest ever surfed on a skimboard and already described as a potential “wave of the year”. Skimboards don’t have fins so this is even more impressive than it looks.

Mad Man In A Wingsuit Flies Through A Waterfall

A fearless guy flies his Squirrel Aura wingsuit through a waterfall in Switzerland — because jumping in a wingsuit and flying just centimetres from a rock wall is not trying hard enough to kill yourself below:

Your Entire Family Can Fit On This Mega Hammock

Your Entire Family Can Waste Away the Summer On This Mega Hammock
There will never be another fight over who gets to lay in the hammock with this monstrosity strung up in your backyard. The Mega Hammock requires you to find at least four nearby trees (or cranes) for hanging, but when it’s up it looks like it can easily support a group of at least 10 loungers — plus a toddler or two. But due to weight restrictions, it maxes out at around three adults.

This isn’t one of your lazy swinging hammocks, though. The Mega Hammock’s mammoth dimensions make it almost look like a fallen sail from a pirate ship, and were it to find itself vertically oriented against the wind, it could probably do some serious damage to whatever it was attached to.
But since the hammocks are each hand made by an FAA-certified parachute rigger, you can probably trust that they’re engineered to handle more stress and strain than you can ever throw at them.

That’s also why they’re $US375 a pop, but with the entire family on board, you’ll probably be happy you didn’t cheap out and just duct tape a bunch of regular-sized hammocks together. [Etsy via The Green Head]

Google strikes smart contact lens deal to track diabetes and fix farsightedness

With Glass and Android Wear, Google has already invested a lot of time and resources into developing the next-generation of wearables, but it's another of its eye-focused projects that has today received its first major boost.

The search giant's secret Google[x] team has confirmed that it's licensed its smart eyewear to healthcare specialist Novartis, which will develop the technology into a product that can improve eye care and help manage diseases and conditions.

As part of the agreement, Google[x] and Novartis' eye care division Alcon will create smart lenses that feature "non-invasive sensors, microchips and other miniaturized electronics" and focus on two main areas.

The first will provide a way for diabetic patients to keep on top of their glucose levels by measuring the sugar levels in their tear fluid, feeding the data back to a smartphone or tablet. The second solution aims to help restore the eye's natural focus on near objects, restoring clear vision to those who are only farsighted (presbyopia).

Google's role will be to develop the tiny electronics needed to collect data and will also take care of the low-power chip designs and fabrication. Alcon, on the other hand, will apply its medical knowledge to develop commercial versions of the smart contact lens. "Our dream is to use the latest technology in the miniaturization of electronics to help improve the quality of life for millions of people," says Google co-founder Sergey Brin. "We are very excited to work with Novartis to make this dream come true."

Fitbit's Tory Burch jewelry makes your activity tracker slightly more fashionable

Even though activity trackers are all the rage, few would call them fashion items. Do you really want explain why you're wearing something so gauche at a wedding or high-brow luncheon? Fitbit isn't happy to have its devices treated as eyesores, though -- it's teaming up with designer Tory Burch to launch jewelry that makes the Flex tracker a little more suitable for upscale gatherings.

The newly available collection starts off with a $38 printed silicone bracelet that, to be frank, is just a small step above (?) what you get out of the box; it's more for casual situations than formal galas. If you're up for something more luxurious, you can spring for a brass bracelet or pendant for $195 and $175, respectively.

With that said, it's hard to see a truly style-conscious person picking these up in the first place, no matter how nice they look. Many attempts at shoehorning fashion into technology haven't fared well, and there's a good chance that you'll still look a bit silly with a tracker hanging from your neck. May I suggest using your phone instead?

Google's Play Store is getting a big, visually intensive makeover

Many would argue that the Google Play Store for Android is useful in its current form, but pretty? Not so much. However, there are now signs that it's going to be much better-looking -- if not necessarily more functional.

Android Police has obtained a wealth of screenshots hinting at a big Play Store revamp that borrows more than a few pages from the company's new Material Design handbook. Extra-large artwork is everywhere, and there are now a slew of icons that make it clear what you'll be getting, such as mature content.

The layout isn't perfect; there's a lot of scrolling, for example, and some of the sharing features appear to be buried at the bottom. With that said, the new storefront is billed as a work in progress with no definite release date. It wouldn't be out of the question to see a few tweaks before the store reaches your mobile device of choice.

Scientists simulate time travel using light particles

We may never see practical time travel in our lifetimes, if it's possible at all. However, a team at the University of Queensland has given the Doc Browns of the world a faint glimmer of hope by simulating time travel on a very, very small scale.

Their study used individual photons to replicate a quantum particle traveling through a space-time loop (like the one you see above) to arrive where and when it began. Since these particles are inherently uncertain, there wasn't room for the paradoxes that normally thwart this sort of research. The particle couldn't destroy itself before it went on its journey, for example.

As you might have gathered from the "simulation" term, sci-fi isn't about to become reality just yet. The scientists haven't actually warped through time -- they've only shown how it can work. It could take a long time before there's proof that whole atoms and objects can make the leap, let alone a real-world demonstration. Should you ever step into a time machine, though, you'll know where it all started and ended.

Toyota's first hydrogen car is priced to go head-to-head with Tesla

Sure, Elon Musk is giving away Tesla patents, but don't be surprised if more established manufacturers politely decline his offer. Instead of batteries and electric charging stations, players like General Motors, Mercedes, Honda and Toyota are focusing their efforts on a very different sort of fuel system: hydrogen.

Toyota has just revealed that its first commercial hydrogen fuel cell car, a sedan modelled on the earlier FCV concept, will be ready for launch in the US and Europe in the summer of next year, priced at seven million yen (around $69,000, although exact international pricing has yet to be determined). By that time, the hydrogen car and its refueling network may lag significantly behind Tesla's all-electric offerings, which currently start at less than $60,000 for the base model Tesla S with lifetime fuel costs included, but Toyota and other hydrogen pioneers believe that they'll eventually gain the upper hand, thanks to their technology's promise of greater range and quicker refueling.

Whereas most Tesla Superchargers take more than an hour to deliver enough charge for a range of 300 miles, hydrogen fuel stations could pump hydrogen gas into a car's tank in as little as five minutes. This gas is then gradually mixed with oxygen inside the car, producing an electro-chemical reaction that offers comparable cruising range to a tank of gas -- around 430 miles, Toyota claims -- with no waste products other than water vapor.

If there's a downside to hydrogen, it's the complexity and cost of gathering, storing and delivering hydrogen at high pressure. Toyota says that it'll only sell its new car in areas that have some level of hydrogen refueling infrastructure already. However, with Tesla's Superchargers being so cheap to build and maintain (especially ones that are solar powered), Toyota may find that launching a commercial hydrogen fuel cell car turns out to be the easy part, compared to the daunting task of ensuring that its customers are always near a fuel station.

World Cup Closing Ceremony Replay Video

Shakira to perform at 2014 world cup closing ceremonyNobody will deny that Brazil messed up the opening ceremony it was so boring and lame that people were question the point of having these ceremonies before the big event. On top of that Pitbull and Jennifer Lopez did not live up to the expectations in their part of performance which lead FIFA & Brazil FA to make things up in the closing ceremony as they are inviting the real queen of World Cup ceremonies “Shakira” to perform at 2014 world cup.
FIFA has confirmed that Shakira will perform in the closing Cermeony and with that she will complete her hattrick of world cup ceremony performances. She performed in 2006 world Cup, while she was all over 2010 world cup in south africa and now she will finish of the 2014 world cup with her performance on her worl cup song La La La (Brazil 2014) at the Maracana stadium.

WORLD CUP 2014 FINAL: Germany 1 - 0 Argentina

Germany won the World Cup for the fourth time thanks to a stunning extra-time winner from super-sub Mario Gotze. The final looked set to go to a penalty shoot-out in the Maracana, but in the 113th unlike many of his team-mates, Schurrle still had plenty of energy left in the tank.

He raced down the left-hand side past three Argentinians and crossed for Gotze who cushioned the ball on his chest swept the ball past Romero from close range. It was a wonderful strike worthy of winning any tournament.
It will take a while for Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain and Rodrigo Palacio to forget this defeat. They were all guilty of missing good chances to give Argentina what would have been a glorious win in the home of their fiercest rivals Brazil.
Tens of thousands of Argentinians had flooded Rio hoping to see Messi inspire his team to their third World Cup win. This was Messi's chance to put himself on a par with his idol Diego Maradona.
But unlike in 1986, when Maradona captained Argentina to victory against the Germans, this was Germany’s night and there would be few who would argue they did not deserve it.
Ever since they swept Portugal aside 4-0 in their opening match, Germany have impressed on the way to World Cup glory.
Blessed with talent from one to 23, they are a brutal attacking unit also capable of keeping things tight at the back. The 7-1 destruction of Brazil in the previous round proved as much.

WORLD CUP 2014: Brazil 0 - 3 Holland

Robin van Persie, Daley Blind and Georginio Wijnaldum gave Holland an easy 3-0 win in a third-place play-off that was riddled with defensive errors from the hosts.
David Luiz, who performed poorly in Brazil's 7-1 semi-final defeat to Germany, gave another masterclass in how not to defend.
The Brazil vice-captain headed the ball straight to Blind in the first half and he lashed the ball past Julio Cesar for Holland's second goal.
The match started in the worst possible way for the hosts, who went behind within three minutes thanks to Van Persie's penalty, and Wijnaldum wrapped up the latest humiliating defeat for Brazil in injury time.
After a poor first-half showing, Brazil improved slightly after the break, thanks mainly to the efforts of Oscar, who was booked for diving when he should have been awarded a penalty following a challenge by Blind.
Louis van Gaal's men were strong in defence all night, though. The same could not be said for the hosts, who were jeered after watching their team suffer back-to-back defeats on home soil for the first time since 1940.

Massive School Of Anchovies Looks Like A Hungry Giant Alien Oil Blob

This big black blob that recently appeared off the San Diego coast looks like the fallout from an oil spill, or an undersea plague coming to haunt humans and probably steal their souls. In reality, it’s a massive school of anchovies — harmless enough that people are actually snorkelling through the dark mass of fish.

Apparently the cooler sea temperatures that La NiƱa’s brought to the Pacific Ocean are ideal for the future Caesar salad toppers, but even the team at the Scripps School of Oceanography aren’t sure why the school’s come this close to shore in this specific spot.

And all I know is that the folks who are surfing and swimming around in the crowd are far braver than I — even though those things have little teensy teeth, the creatures that want to eat them probably have a stronger bite.

iWatch to enter mass-production by November?

Apple's long-rumoured iWatch could be entering production as soon as November this year, if a report from KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is to be believed. Kuo previously predicted a September date for iWatch's manufacturing launch, but his latest report says otherwise.

“We have pushed back our estimated time of iWatch mass production from late-September to mid-/ late- November," says Kuo, as reported by 9to5mac. "We also lower our forecast of iWatch 2014 shipments by 40% to 3mn units."

Alongside the refreshed date forecast, Kuo also commented on the prospective features of an Apple smartwatch, namely a flexible AMOLED display, a sapphire-coated display cover, higher waterproof standards than other Apple devices, and new system-on-a-chip components.

We'd say the higher waterpoof standards are a likely bet, since wearables are much more exposed than pocket-bound tech like a smartphone, for instance. A flexible AMOLED display isn't out of the question either - we've seen a lot of flexible displays from other firms lately, and there's been plenty of rumours suggesting that Apple's iWatch will make use of a wrap-around screen.

The system on a chip would be a great addition to the iWatch internals too, because it means Apple could bung a shed-load of sensors onto a single chip to track, for example, various fitness metrics.
The report also makes mention of advanced mapping capabilities for the iWatch, and deep integration with iOS8 and HealthKit.

We're not too sure whether November is a late production date, as it could put the device at perilous risk of missing the Christmas splurge season. While you're waiting for the big Apple announcement, why not check out our iWatch rumour round-up page and get the latest on the Cuptertino's mystery timepiece?

Sony's sold over 100-million PS3, PS4, and Vita consoles

Sony has revealed its flogged a whopping 100-million Playstation 3, Playstation 4, and PS Vita units worldwide. Interestingly, the majority of sales are attributed to the PS3, which (as of November 2013) had sold about 80-million units since its launch back in 2006.

We also found out earlier this month that 9-million PS4's have been sold, a million of which entered customer's hands within its first 24 hours on sale. The PS Vita hasn't performed too well thus far, so we doubt it's making up the remaining 11-million. We're guessing Sony's managed to shift a few more PS3's since last November, giving the Vita less of a gap to close.

It's good news for Sony then, with its PS4 one-upping Microsoft's Xbox One, which has sold just 5-million consoles to date - just over half of the PS4's total sales.

The new data comes from a Sony Playstation promo video for its console line, which you can check out below:

Currys & PC world reveal their top 10 tech picks for the festive season

Currys & PC World have revealed their predictions for the top 10 gadget bestsellers this coming Christmas, and it's laden with wearables. Atop the podium sits the Gear Fit, Samsung's smart wearable that tracks your fitness goals, followed in kind by the Fitbit Force.

Wearable tech has never been so attractive and it's a bustling market to be in. It's evolving for the better too, with more people looking for wearables that don't just track, but connect to other products and can be access remotely. The much-coveted fitness tech means we're looking at juicier wearable sales, which are set to grow as the nation continues its health kick - a trend that might explain #4, the NutriBullet high-speed blender and juicer.

“Customers are focusing on their health and fitness more than ever before and portable technology is very much the future as busy customers want to be able to do more things remotely and conveniently," says Rupert Nichols, Head of Mobile Computing and Connectivity and Currys & PC World.

"We have seen a steady rise in sales of wearable technology but we expect to sell a lot more units this Christmas as everyone will want to trim up in the New Year.” Aside from health and fitness gadgets, the list also features the Sonos ‘Multi Room System’, a stylish multi-room audio system, and the extremely popular GoPro action camera.

LG G3 Prime confirmed by Korean promo poster

The LG G3 Prime has been outed by a promo poster distributed by a retail store in Korea.
The updated version of the original LG G3 appears to be arriving with the latest Snapdragon 805 chipset.

The clue is in the Cat.6 tagline, which is capable of delivering super-fast 300Mbps download speeds but isn’t supported by the old Snapdragon 801, suggesting it will arrive with the 805 option. The G3 Prime bears a striking resemblance to the Samsung Galaxy S5 LTE-A  recently released in Korea featuring a QHD display, Snapdragon 805 processor and superfast CAT 6 LTE.

The poster however doesn’t give away much else apart from the new connectivity speed.
Still, the juiced up G3 will have a 5.5-inch QHD screen, 13MP camera with OIS and razor-thin bezels. The Korean store is also taking pre-orders for the G3 Prime, although right now price and release dates are unknown.

According to a statement from LG Greece, a “Prime” device for other markets outside of Korea is also currently in the works, but may not release for another 3-4 months. The rumour mill also suggest that two more LG G3 version are on the way - the LG G3 Beat, a smaller version of the G3, and the LG G3 mini, an even smaller version.

Xbox exec says “momentum shift” has changed console war

Despite Sony PS4 sales nearly doubling Microsoft Xbox One figures, a “momentum shift” in the console war could see the competition close up. Speaking to CVG, Xbox UK marketing executive Harvey Eagle explains, "The change started to happen when Titanfall was released in March, it's been a hugely successful title and the start of what I believe to be is the momentum shift.”

Eagle points out other improvements to the Xbox One which should also affect long-term sales including the Kinect-free Xbox One, the official price drop for the UK, the expansion of the Games with Gold program and the steady flow of monthly system updates.
Eagle says Microsoft is determined to come out on top and aims on “winning” this console generation.

"There are other success measures, and market share is certainly a very important one. Microsoft is a very ambitious company, and we want to be number one," he added. "We're in this for the long-term and the company is committed to making that happen."

But can the Xbox One take the PS4 from the top spot? It’s easier said than done, although with a strong line-up of games coming out over the next six months I wouldn’t rule it out.
As a means to improve the Xbox One further, Eagle said Microsoft will keep its ears to the ground and take in all feedback from users.

"We won't stop listening and responding. If that means we have to change in the future based on what people are asking for, then we're completely committed to doing that," he said.
