Beauty Tip: The Dos And Don'ts Of Getting a Facial

Follow these tips before your next facial to make the entire experience better than ever…

DO:

Tell the therapist about your skin concerns
One of the main reasons to get a facial is to revive, replenish and restore your skin’s health. Make the most of your appointment by letting your beauty therapist know about your skin type, skin care routine, and any concerns you have, like acne, pigmentation or dryness. This way, they can tailor the facial and treat problem areas.

Say whether you’d like extractions or not
Let’s be real: extractions are downright painful. And while it’s best to keep your grimy paws away from pimples and blackheads, it’s fine to have them tended to by a professional – just be sure to give them the go ahead to squeeze!

bh tip: Our advice? If you have any big events or meetings in the 24 hours after your facial, save the extractions for next time.

Speak up if the pressure is too soft/hard
Is deep, muscle-penetrating pressure your thing? Or do you favour a more tender touch? Let your therapist know your preference before the treatment. If the pressure isn’t right during the facial, don’t be afraid to speak up. After all, you’re paying hard-earned cash for it, so you want to enjoy the experience!

Take your time when it’s finished
Just like after a massage, slowly open your eyes and ease out of your zen state post-facial. A great facial will leave you feeling seriously sleepy, relaxed and calm, so soak it up by taking all the time you need to sit up and hop off that comfy bed.

DON’T:

Wear make-up
Unless you’re going straight from work, don’t rock up to your appointment with a full face of make-up. Try to book your facial first thing in the morning and avoid cleansing your skin beforehand. This way, the beauty therapist will be able to see your skin in its completely natural state and get a better idea of your skin type.

Be afraid to say if anything feels strange
Burning and stinging skin during a facial are sure-fire signs that your skin’s reacting to the products being used, so be sure to tell the facialist if and when you feel any unwelcome sensations.

Worry about chatting
Beauty therapists are trained to take the client’s lead, so if you’re up for a chat and strike up a conversation, they’ll follow suit. On the flipside, if you’d rather stay quiet, they’ll let you be. And don’t fret – they won’t take it personally! You’re there to relax.

Feel bad about walking out empty-handed
Post-treatment, the therapist may take you through the products they used on your skin and ask whether you’d like to purchase them to use at home. If you’re not interested, don’t feel pressured to walk out with a completely new skin care routine. Just politely decline, and go on your merry way – with super fresh, glowy skin!
