Mercedes-Benz to recall 147,000 vehicles

The recalled vehicles are at risk of a fire due to a rubber seal within the engine compartment -- there's a chance it could end up falling into the exhaust, and that could cause a fire to start, at least according to a recent report from the NHTSA.

The affected cars are of the 2013 through 2015 model years, and include both station wagons and sedans, among them being E-class and CLS-class models. Those with an affected vehicle will be receiving a notification from the auto maker starting next month, after which point owners will be able to get it serviced.

The recall doesn't come as a surprise -- consumers have grown jaded in the face of increasing numbers of automotive recalls, something that has steadily increased over the past several months. In 2014, the industry saw a record number of recalls, and the NHTSA is gunning for improvements to the number of recalled cars that are ultimately fixed...all the while warning that the number of recalls could be higher this year than last.

Peugeot's 208 is their compact hatchback model, and it's been the bestseller amongst the other Peugeot models.

They've tweaked the exterior and lowered CO2 emissions, the exterior adds a wider front grill and two-tone headlights, masked in black and chrome. It all sits on new 16 and 17 inch (41 and 43 cm) alloy wheels. The engine has three power level choices. The 75 and 100 S&S are five-speed manual, and the 120 S&S is six-speed manual.

Besides new design features, the 208 has a new Active City Brake feature designed specifically for city driving. The Active City Brake works when driving under 20 mph (32 kph). It uses a short range sensor to detect nearby vehicles. This sensor specifically detects cars driving the same direction and stationary cars. In theory, it would sense the car in next lane driving along side you, or the car in front of you braking. It's designed to make an accident less serious when a driver reacts slowly. There is also a rear-facing reverse camera as optional add-on.

Another new feature is the MirrorScreen technology. This allows you to share your smartphone screen with your vehicle's display. This is perfect for drivers who use still prefer to use their phone's navigation or music streaming services.

UberEATS delivers users lunch in Barcelona

UberEATS is a different twist on the otherwise controversial service: users pull out their smartphone, fire up the Uber app, and order a meal from a nearby restaurant rather than a car that could drive them there. A convenience that is particularly welcoming during lazy and cold days.

Uber promises the meal will be delivered in less than 10 minutes, which is an exceptionally tight deadline. UberEATS is working wtih Barcelona restaurants to help make this happen, as well as Plateselector. So far the restaurants Feeld Organic and Surf House Barcelona are both dishing up food to customers.

As with ordering a ride, the meal is paid for through the app using the debit/credit card one has tied to their Uber account. The app also facilitates real-time tracking so you can spend every hungry moment watching your food get a little closer.

American Horror Story's Star Ben Woolf Dead at 34

Ben Woolf, 34, an actor known for starring on the FX series American Horror Story, died on Monday in Los Angeles as a result of a head injury sustained when he was hit by a car last week.

Variety reports Woolf was struck by the side mirror of an SUV when he was crossing a street in Hollywood on Thursday. He was taken to an L.A. area hospital where he remained in critical condition until he succumbed to his injuries.

American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy sent a tweet expressing his sympathy on Monday:
"Ben was one-of-a-kind, and will never be forgotten," the statement read. "The time we all shared together will be remembered forever."

Lenovo admits installing Superfish adware was a mistake

What is Superfish? Well, it’s a program that bombards affected users with pop-up adverts and injects more ads into Google searches. Security experts say it also leaves a gaping security hole on computers, in the form of a self-signed root certificate. When PC security is down, it leaves users vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks. That could allow bank details and other sensitive information to be hacked in the meantime.

While Lenovo initially admitted that Superfish was pre-installed “to enhance the experience for users,” it has now come clean about its big blunder.  “We messed up,” Lenovo Chief Technology Officer Peter Hortensius told Recode on Friday. “We should have known that going in that that was the case. We just flat-out missed it on this one, and did not appreciate the problem it was going to create.”

“We are taking our beating like we deserve on this issue,” he added. Lenovo has released an automatic uninstall tool on its website to remove Superfish, however it has played down the actual risk of the adware.

"We have thoroughly investigated this technology and do not find any evidence to substantiate security concerns,” the Chinese company said in a statement earlier this week. “We are not just curled up in a ball,” Hortensius said. “We are taking real action to make this right with our customers.”
Lenovo has since stopped preloading its machines with Superfish, and has disabled existing PCs on the market from activating it.

Apple Is Quietly Repairing MacBook Pros With Faulty Video For Free

Apple has launched a repair program for MacBook Pros from 2011 to 2013 displaying video problems. People with video issues who have the affected models can get them fixed for free, and people who already paid to get their laptops fixed can get a refund. This includes MacBooks with scrambled video, video that won’t turn on and unexpected restarts.

This may be an example of legal and public pressure causing Apple to finally fix the issue. One of the complaints I’ve heard over and over again (seriously, I get emailed every week about this) is that Apple has been ignoring a graphics problem on the same models of MacBook Pros its now fixing.
A class-action lawsuit last year alleged that Apple refuses to reimburse people with 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pros from 2011 that displayed the exact same scrambled-screen issues that Apple is now offering to fix for free.

A petition with over 18,000 signatures implored Apple to repair 2011 MacBook Pros with similar issues. People created websites to draw attention to the issue. So even though Apple says this affects a “small percentage” of its computers, the negative public reaction has been pretty loud.

Repairs start today in the US and Canada and on February 27 internationally. The affected models include 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pros from 2011, and 15-inch MacBook Pro Retinas manufactured between late 2012 and early 2013. You’ll be able to take it in for a free fix until February 27, 2016 or three years after you purchased the computer.

Buddha Statue Reveals Mummified Monk Hidden Inside

A CT scan and endoscopy carried out by the Netherlands-based Drents Museum at the Meander Medical Centre in Amersfoort, showed the ancient reliquary fully encases the mummified remains of a Buddhist master known as Liuquan of the Chinese Meditation School.

While it was known beforehand the remains of a person were inside, another startling discovery was made during the scan: where the organs had been removed prior to mummification, researches discovered rolls of paper scraps covered in Chinese writing. The Liuquan mummy has since been transported to Hungary where it will be on view at the Hungarian Natural History Museum through May of 2015.

Vodafone Is Partnering With Stan To Stream

Mike Sneesby from Stan says the agreement is a natural one — “From the start, we saw a very clear strategy from Vodafone. We kicked off discussions before we even launched; it was very obvious for us.” Stan has enjoyed a sharp boost in subscriber numbers since it launched, with heavy advertising giving it a head start over potential rivals like Netflix, although all users are still within their 30-day free trial period.

Stan is a video streaming service, and as such it can chew through a large amount of bandwidth in a short time; on the face of it it’s not a great idea on a mobile data network or on a smartphone. Vodafone’s Steve Smyth isn’t worried about Stan affecting users’ data usage adversely, though, saying “the baseline amount of data is sufficient for the average user… our data work-out will let customers work out how much they need.”

There is no actual detail about the partnership, Vodafone says it “will announce full details of the Stan offer in the coming weeks.”
