Is HTC building Nexus 9 at Google HQ?

New reports have added life to the rumour that HTC might be working on a Nexus-stamped tablet over at Google HQ. The Taiwanese tech firm is allegedly sending engineers over to Google's Mountain View complex to help build the device. HTC engineers have been flying to the Googleplex in Mountain View in recent months to work on the project, they said," reads the report. The Nexus line is a range of smartphones and tablets that run off Google's Android and are, for all intents and purposes, a Google device, although the firm outsources the design and building process to OEMs.

For example, the Nexus 7 tablet was designed by Asus, whereas the Nexus 5 smartphone came courtesy of LG Electronics. HTC isn't the first company that comes to mind as a strong candidate for Google tablet construction, mostly as the firm's strengths tend to lie in the smartphone market.
Despite this, the choice of HTC means other firms assuredly lost out in the running, with WSJ specifically mentioning Samsung as one of the losing firms.

The WSJ article also mentions that Google might have ditched Sammy out of wariness for its disproportionate strength in the Android market. "Another reason for the partnership: Google has long been wary of Samsung, maker of the Nexus 10 tablet, becoming too powerful among Android makers," reckons the WSJ.

The HTC One and HTC One M8 smartphones have both received strong reviews across the board, so the outlook for Google's next Nexus tablet could hopeful if HTC can successfully channel the same design skills. Neither Google nor HTC have publicly commented on the potential partnership, although that's not unusual at this stage in the process.
