If you're used to travelling around the capital, you'll be
well aware that you can currently use contactless NFC (near-field
communication) bank cards on buses. Now Transport for
London is bringing the feature to the Tube, which will accept
contactless payment as of September 16. Pretty much making your Oyster
card redundant if you have one.
Contactless payment will
also be supported on the Overground and DLR lines and you'll be able to
keep track of your payment history and travelling preferences online. Existing
alongside the RFID-using Oyster cards, the new contactless payment
system will allow you to add a weekly cap from Monday to Sunday. The
system keeps track of your journeys and figures out the cheapest
possible fare for your movements.
If you make multiple
journeys in one week using the same contactless card, then your payments
will be capped to at the price of an equivalent 7-day travelcard.
