Smartband don Jawbone is opening up its app software, meaning you'll be able to use the UP app on third-party wearables. The
app is a health-focused fitness tracker that offers a clean interface,
various logging systems, and support for sleep, workout, food, drink,
and mood data.
The app's API will be available as
open-source, and will support alternative operating systems like
Google's Android Wear, according to Recode. This also means that it should, depending on what Apple releases later today, work with the suspected iWatch wearable device. The Pebble smartwatch is also set to get a Jawbone-friendly app thanks to the new move, as reported by TechRadar.
"Obviously
we're incredibly excited that Jawbone is writing a Pebble app that lets
our users enjoy great activity tracking and do more with their
Pebbles," says a spokesperson speaking to TechRadar.
"We
believe that the future of activity tracking hinges on companies
allowing their smart algorithms to run cross-platform and gather
information from multiple sources.
Until now, Jawbone's
UP app was Jawbone smartband specific, so Recode also says the firm has been working on raising $100 million in funding, and is now valued at $3.3 billion. Not bad.
he new change means UP will
now be more of a wide platform rather than proprietary software. If
more people start using the Jawbone software, the firm's sure to get a
boost in publicity and should see hardware sales rise as a result - an
important goal considering the endless torrent of wearables launching
this year.
